Some of you may recall a radio personality named Paul Harvey, who from 1952—2008 had a news program with a segment called The Rest of the Story. The premise was to feature little known or forgotten facts with a key element (usually person’s name) withheld until the end. After the name waa revealed, Harvey would sign off with “And now you know……..the rest of the story”. In truth, Paul’s middle name was Harvey and his surname was Aurandt. Who knew? The Bible holds well known historical facts surrounding the death and Resurrection of Jesus. Many prefer to focus on the graphic brutality of the scourging and crucifixion while others focus on the desertion of the disciples, especially Peter. Bible studies have been done that highlight the seven last words spoken and the post resurrection commission of the disciples to go into all the world to preach the gospel. Do you know the rest of the story? Luke tells us in Acts 1: 9-11 “He (Jesus) was taken up before their (disciples) very eyes, and a cloud hid Him from their sight. They were looking intently up into the sky as He was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. Men of Galilee, they said, why stand ye here gazing into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen Him go into heaven.” As people who have accepted Jesus as Savior and the Lord of our lives, we too should be concerned about how we live as we watch for His return. Paul tells us in Titus 2: 11-14 “For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say No to ungodliness and worldly passions and to live self-controlled , upright and godly lives in this present age , while we wait for the blessed hope-the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.” In Revelation 22:12, Jesus said “ Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me and I will give to everyone according to what he has done”. And now you know …….the rest of the story.
